A new scheme launching in the north next month will make it easier for people of any age to enter an apprenticeship, which in turn could lead to a possible career change.
Anyone over 16 will be able to enrol on the new Apprenticeships NI programme devised by the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL).
Previously it was restricted to people aged between 16 and 24.
Employment and learning minister Sir Reg Empey announced the improved accessibility to apprenticeships during a visit to the Northern Ireland Electricity training centre at Nutts Corner, Co Antrim.
“It’s evident that by investing in our employees through the delivery of well-structured and tailored training, we can realise a truly skilled workforce that will improve productivity, raise skills standards and improve the quality of customer service,” he said.
“Everyone reaps the benefits – employees, companies and ultimately the wider economy.
“Apprenticeships NI will further enable employers to develop and enhance the skills of its workforce.”
This year NIE won a major award for its commitment to apprenticeship training and, after a tour of the training centre, the minister encouraged all employers to consider apprenticeships.
“Employers undoubtedly have a vital role to play in encouraging and facilitating apprenticeships,” the minister said.
“I would urge all employers in Northern Ireland, large and small, to really make it their business this year to find out more about apprenticeships and how they can help their business grow, as well as raise the skills level of the Northern Ireland workforce.”
Apprenticeships NI offers a diverse range of training and the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications.
Apprentices will be with an employer and in paid employment from day one.
There are more than 100 apprenticeships available in areas including computer science,
construction and engineering.
Once signed up to Apprenticeships NI, participants will begin to get the training and qualifications necessary for his or her career and the full cost of the training is met.
